Privacy Notice

AroundU.TU is a student-built site that helps incoming Tulane students meet each other and find organizations, events, and jobs. We're not run by or affiliated with Tulane University. This notice explains, in plain language, what we collect and what we do with it.

What we collect

When you create a student account, we collect:

• Required: your name, Tulane email address, a password, your student status, and your class year.
• Optional: hometown, major, interests, a short bio, pronouns, gender, a social media link, and roommate preferences (whether you're looking for a roommate, sleep schedule, tidiness, guests, room vibe, and whether you want a substance-free room).

When you create an organization account or list an organization, we collect your name, email address, a password, your role in the organization, and the organization's details (name, category, interest area, time commitment, description, contact or join link, and meeting time). If you post events or jobs, we store what you post. If you message our team or send a report, we store those messages and our replies. If you send direct messages to other students, we store them so you can both see your conversation.

Your password is stored in scrambled (hashed) form, so no one on our team can read it. We also keep basic technical records, like when you signed up and logged in, to run the site and keep it secure.

Who can see it

• Our team can see everything you enter except your password. We review each new account to confirm it belongs to a Tulane student.
• Other approved students can see your name and the profile details you share, including your gender and roommate preferences if you answer those questions. Your email address is never shown to other students.
• Organization listings, events, and jobs are visible to approved members. Once our team approves an organization, approved AroundU.TU members can see its listing and the events and jobs it posts. The name and email of the person who manages the organization are not shown.
• Direct messages between students are private to the two of you. Our team doesn't review them unless one of you reports the conversation. When you report a conversation, the most recent messages in it (up to 30) are sent to our team with your report.
• Messages and reports you send to our team go only to our team. If you report someone, they aren't told who reported them.
• Notifications: if you turn them on, your browser gives us a device address from its notification service (Apple, Google, or Mozilla), which we use only to send you AroundU.TU notifications. The content is encrypted so only your device can read it. Turn them off anytime in My account.
• Blocking: if you block someone, they can't message you and you won't see each other in the directory. They aren't told they were blocked.
• We never sell your information or share it with advertisers.
• Our site is hosted by Cloudflare, which stores the data on our behalf.

How we verify accounts

Right now, our team reviews every new account by hand. We plan to add email confirmation codes, sent to your Tulane email address, to verify accounts. When we do, we'll update this notice to explain how those emails work.

Your choices

• You can edit your profile anytime from My account.
• To delete your account and all of your data, email us at mktg42502026@gmail.com. We'll delete it within 7 days.
• Everything outside the required fields is optional.

Changes to this notice

We're a new platform, and this notice will be reviewed by a legal professional. If we make changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
